There is a lot of advertisement going on about the HCG Diet. Supposedly you could lose up to 1-2 lb per day of pure body fat, without hunger, loss of muscle mass, or fear of it coming back. What truth is there to this diet? Is there any scientific backing for it? Is it all hype? Here’s my understanding about the HCG Diet.
I remember reading The Weight Loss Cure “they” Don’t Want You To Know About by Kevin Trudeau back when it was published in 2007. I also purchased at the same time the book written by the creator of the HCG Diet Protocol, Dr. A. T. W. Simeons. Trudeau’s book was mostly a modern introduction to Dr. Simions protocol, which had been around since the mid 1950′s. Historically the protocol seems to have been a fairly effective method at reducing body fat permanently.
Theoretically the protocol would reset the Hypothalamus in the brain, and therefore reset your body’s set point, allowing you to lose weight and keep it off. It does this through a combination of a special 500 calorie per day diet, and daily injections of Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (HCG). This combination, allegedly, works synergistically to allow your body to lose the excess weight, and reset your body’s weight set point.
The Problems with What’s being Advertised
The first problem is that HCG is available in the United States by prescription only. Any time you hear about the HCG Protocol being available without a prescription, you can be assured that it’s a scam.
The second problem that I see most often is that many cut corners to try and make the program more readily available. One way they cut corners is by giving weekly doses of HCG, or premixing all the doses ahead of time. The HCG has to be mixed fresh, and injected daily, otherwise the protocol will not work.
Conclusion
It is the opinion of this author, that unless you’re willing to take a month off, and go to a clinic, and spend thousands of dollars, it ultimately is not worth it. Is it theoretically possible to go through the procedure on your own and get the real thing? Yes. Is it likely you’ll find the real thing, and be able to stick to the program? No. And in the end, if you don’t change the habits that got you fat in the first place, it won’t matter.
I recommend that you find a nutritionist and/or trainer in your area who can walk you through the changes you need to make. When I work with a client, I work on specific lifestyle changes that ensure progress, and long term success. Find a nutritionist who does the same, and has a proven track record, and you’ll save money while getting better results.
