Many people fear the dreaded back fat, but few know what causes it, let alone what they can do to reverse it. In the BioSignature the Subscapular Skinfold (the measurement we take on the upper back) is an indicator of carbohydrate tolerance. In short, the smaller this measurement, the better you can handle carbohydrates. When we expose ourselves to excessive carbohydrates, our body starts to become resistant to the hormone Insulin. When we become resistant to insulin, our blood sugar and blood insulin levels rise, and this causes more fat to be deposited in the upper back region.
What does this mean for my health?
This site has been very highly correlated for years with insulin resistance, Diabetes, and Heart Disease. The higher this site, the more likely you are to deal with Heart Disease and Diabetes. This can be a great way for those who may not be dealing with these issues to find out if they need to talk to their doctor.
What can we do about it?
The upper back is actually one of the easier sites to manage. It tends to respond very well to positive changes in diet and exercise. Additionally there are very effective supplements that help manage blood sugar and insulin sensitivity to really accelerate progress.
